I just had a fun online experience. I watched the ALA webcast while following the hastag #alamw11 on twitter. It was a little overstimulating but now I know ALL the award winning books. My Caldecott pick, Chalk by Bill Thomson, didn't win. In fact, none of my 2010 favorite books won. And I haven't even read the winners! Oh well!
Here are the Caldecott Honor books 2011
Dave the Potter also won the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustrator.
The Caldecott Medal went to:
Things that excited me:
I was very excited when Tomie dePaola won the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award! He is one of my most favorite author/illustrators!!
I was also excited that We are in a Book by Mo Williems won an honor in the Geisel awards.
Bink and Gollie by Kate DiCamillo won the Geisel.
And I felt like One Crazy Summer was a great choice for the Coretta Scott King Award. And I thought it was cute that after this book won, Rita Williams-Garcia's daughter tweeted, "THAT'S MY MOM!!" Sweet.
I now have a lengthy "to-read" list:
The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex
They called themselves the KKK
Spies of Missippi
For the Boys:
“Grandma’s Gift,” illustrated and written by Eric Velasquez
You can view all of the winners at ALA. I would recommend that any kid lit lovers try to watch the webcast. It's a lot of fun. Big shout outs go to my boys. Tyson's nap ended just as the announced the last big award! Logan sat right next to me and did pattern blocks and puzzles the whole time. A few times he took a break and we played balloon volleyball while I just listened :) It's been a fun day!
