In one of my very first blog posts, I asked readers to share their favorite books to read with their children. Emily said she liked "The Monster at the end of this book." CLASSIC. Julie said that my nephews liked "Green Eggs and Ham". And Karen suggested "The Pout Pout Fish." a book I wasn't familiar with. Eventually we checked it out from the library (after waiting several weeks just for it to become available). Immediately Logan fell in love with the Pout Pout Fish. We almost missed The Pout Pout Fish in the Big Big Dark in 2010, however, another blogger did a review of the book and we scored our copy in the last week of 2010. It has definitely been a hit around here.
In this story, Mrs. Clam yawns and the pearl in her shell falls out into the ocean. The pout-pout fish wants to help Mrs. Clam recover her pearl but realizes he is too scared of the dark to go in the deep dark parts of the ocean.
With flowing rhyme that is never forced:
So he swam a little deeper,
Where the light grew dimmer,
As his heart flit-fluttered,
Mr. Fish grew grimmer.
And enough humor for the adults:
A swirl of wriggly worms,
Made a search team swirl,
and they helped with the hunt,
for the yawn-gone pearl. (I giggle every time).
This book begs to be read aloud.
It is coupled with fantastic illustrations that are both cartoonish and very detailed. Your child will want want to hold the book himself and study these illustrations for a while.
This is a wonderfully written and illustrated book with a postive message about overcoming our fears together and helping our friends.
Since Logan loves this book SO much, I have to link it up to:
Here my reviews of some of our other top 10 of 2010. We are counting down from now until January 10, when the ALA awards are announced!
