The Gift of Reading

Last week we traveled to Illinois to see the boys' Uncle Brian marry Aunt Kari.

The wedding was beautiful, entertaining, and fun, fun, fun. The drive there, not so much. This was our view out the window once we left Missouri. It.never.changed. Ever.
Reading books in the car is always a great way to pass the time. To liven it up for the road, though, I decided to give the boys book presents.

I didn't want to spend a ton of money on new books-- so I didn't. I went to the basement and raided our own stash of books. True, we have a TON of books, but even those that were loved and familiar to the boys became priceless treasures when they were placed into recycled gift bags.

These were some of the books I took for Logan.
The favorite ones were the sturdier board books and the ones that he could "read" himself. They also were partial to the other boy's book.
And here are some I took for Tyson.
All but one of those books is a board book. Since Tyson is only 17 months, I didn't want to have to hang over the backseat worrying about him ripping book pages.

I didn't even wrap the books ahead of time. I just kept them in a box near my feet and I slipped them into a gift bag every 30 minutes or so and passed them back.

Each time, Logan would say, "A present? For me?!"

I had thought it would be nice to have extra books for bedtime at the hotel as well. The boys, however, partied so hard at the reception that they feel asleep on the 5 minute drive back to the hotel. They did not wake up until the next morning!

Consider giving the gift of reading on your next trip. It might buy you a few minutes of quiet or might help distract the kids when they get whiney or start fighting. Or are my kids the only ones that do that?
I'm linking this up:

  1. Gift bag is a really neat touch. We read a lot on the road, but lately we also got into the habit of audio books. This definitely helps time fly by on long trips.

  2. Cute cute cute! Love it. I do similar at Xmas each year....wrap a book (all from our Xmas stash though I do sometimes have to buy a few new ones..for variety) and then each night he picks one out to read....

PS - LOVE Press Here! On my LONG list to buy...

  3. What a great idea!!! What's better than getting "new" books?
