Room on the Broom DVD Giveaway

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson is a wonderful picture book that has been made into an animated movie. We recently had the opportunity to watch the Room on the Broom DVD for a family movie night. Today I have the opportunity to share this DVD with one lucky reader. It would make a fun movie to watch for a family movie night. The story is great year round, but it would also make a great Halloween movie as the main character is a witch.
This post contains a giveaway. I was provided a copy of the DVD for review purposes free from the publisher.

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson

We have been fans of Julia Donaldson's book, Room on the Broom, for a long time. It's a great book for exploring the math concept of addition. I've created a free room on the broom activity for using this book in the math classroom. Room on the Broom is also a great story and a perfect opportunity for studying rhyming text.

Room on the Broom Movie Description

In this tale of friendship and adventure, join a friendly witch and her cat as they fly happily through the sky on their broomstick—until the witch drops her hat, then her bow, then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals—a dog, a parrot and a frog—find the missing items and all they want in return is a ride on the broomstick. But is there room on the broom for so many new friends? The kindly witch thinks there is—much to the frustration of her cat.  But when disaster strikes, and the witch is about to be eaten by a fearsome dragon, she is saved by the gang of animals, all working together.  The witch’s cat learns the importance of friends and family, and the witch rewards her new friends with a magnificent broom that is big enough for everyone!

Room on the Broom Movie Review

We often check out animated versions of books from the library, but I was very impressed with the high quality of the Room on the Broom DVD. The movie exposes kids to the original book language and wonderful rhyme. It is narrated, but the dialogue is spoken by the individual characters. The animation really brings the book characters to life and shows their personalities. The witch is friendly, not scary. The cat is a bit grouchy at times-- but only because he doesn't want to share his broom-- smart kitty! My boys were engaged with the story because of a large dragon that is looming. Through out the movie, they could spy the dragons big eyes or spot a shadow of a dragon. The anticipation kept my boys pretty hooked. In fact, they wanted to watch the movie two times in a row. We still had half a bowl of popcorn, so we snuggled up and watched it again!
